Hero Watch Face

Lily 2 Active is a fashion-forward women's smartwatch designed for everyday wear.

As the UI Lead, I led a team of 4 designers across Taiwan and U.S., driving the strategic planning behind Lily’s brand positioning, aesthetic direction and design consistency.

Within 2 months, we delivered 3 hero and 6 default watch faces, featured as lead visuals across global launch.

Getting to know the product
Getting to know the product

I started by deeply understanding Lily’s product context, its features, constraints, aesthetic tone and value proposition, to make sure every design decision aligned with its brand and target users.

This strategic foundation ensured the watch face designs felt cohesive with the overall experience and highlighted what sets Lily apart within Garmin’s lineup.

Mapping Lily 2 Active's Market Position
Mapping Lily 2 Active's Market Position

To clarify our target users, I mapped Lily 2 Active’s position within Garmin’s lineup, as a sportier evolution of Lily 1 & 2 that blends everyday elegance with lightweight fitness. Unlike performance-focused lines like Forerunner, Lily 2 Active prioritises style, simplicity and versatility for women seeking wellness tracking without pro-level complexity.

Building on What Worked
Building on What Worked

Before designing for Lily 2 Active, I reviewed internal tryouts and user feedback from Lily 1 and 2 to identify what resonated and what fell short. This informed a more focused, user-driven direction for the next generation.

Balancing Consistency & Identity
Balancing Consistency & Identity

With Lily 2 Active’s positioning defined, I audited watch face styles across Garmin’s wellness lineup through mapping digital, analog and hybrid designs to spot patterns and gaps. This informed our style mix, ensuring Lily 2 Active aligned with broader design expectations while establishing its own distinct visual identity.

Designing Without Colour
Designing Without Colour

With Lily 2 Active’s monochrome display, visual clarity became essential. Without colour, usability relied heavily on form, contrast and layout. To guide our design strategy, I analysed competitor watch faces, studying their use of typography, layout and data presentation to maximise legibility.

From Concept to Approval
From Concept to Approval

Each watch face underwent a multi-stage review process with teams across UI, PM, ID, software, marketing and segment leads. At every stage, we aligned on concept direction, technical feasibility, brand fit and user needs.

This process ensured every approved design was polished, functional and aligned with Garmin’s technical constraints and broader product goals.

Bridging Internal Gaps with Real Feedback

Noticing an all-male decision group, I initiated a survey with 30 female colleagues (ages 20–49) to bring in more representative feedback. Using a simple ranking method, they evaluated style, clarity and appeal across hero sets.

Their input guided stakeholders toward a final selection that better aligned with both brand direction and user preferences.

Beyond Aesthetics
Beyond Aesthetics

This project reinforced the value of grounding design in real user context, both through strategic product analysis and inclusive feedback. By aligning cross-functional teams and bringing underrepresented voices into the process, we delivered watch faces that felt not only polished and on-brand, but genuinely resonant with the people they were designed for.
